A WORLD GOING GREEN

It is difficult to pick up a newspaper or magazine without noticing that the world is going green. With rising material and energy costs, as well as greater social and legal pressures, there is a clear movement among all types of organizations to reduce their environmental impact. In fact, with all this publicity "going green" has now become a household phrase.

LEARN MORE ABOUT GOING GREEN

We believe that information can empower our customers and employees. That is why we encourage you to find out more about climate change and see how you can have an impact on the environment. We also know that small changes can be much greater than the sum of their parts. Take a look at these green living tips that can help you make a difference at home and at work and while commuting in your car.

BENEFITS OF CUTTING CARBON

Reducing the amount of carbon you emit is one of the fastest, most effective ways to save your business money.

* SMALL CHANGES WILL HELP

You don't have to invest lots of money or make big changes to your business to save on your energy bills. The right combination of small changes, many costing nothing, can reduce your energy bill by thousands of rupees. These changes may earn back money for you through savings on electricity bills, operating costs, higher employee efficiency, and many more such benefits.

* PAY LESS FOR YOUR ENERGY

The price of energy on running air-conditioners is exorbitant. The load on AC depends on the heating & cooling conditions of the building. During day time, the building gets heated continuously by sun light. If there are glasses used in building design like window glasses & roof glasses, then, heat percolates inside through such glasses creating huge heat loads on air conditioners resulting in higher electricity consumptions. Thus leading to higher releases of GHG into the already overloaded atmosphere.

These effects can be reduced by using energy saving products.  The result is that building saves huge energy costs. Take a look at these Top Tips Also, your building earns Carbon Credit Points which can be traded for earning additional profits.

BUSINESS BENEFITS

There are lots of benefits to reducing your energy use – here are just some of them.

* Money

A structured approach to switching machines off after use, turning the heating down in warm weather, and upgrading operations equipment can save you a surprising amount on your energy bill. "Controlling AC to the required levels".

* Reputation

Leadership in your sector or supply chain with lower carbon products and services will enhance your reputation. Increasing number  of consumers are making choices based on a company's environmental credentials.

* Employee & Retention

Leadership in your sector or supply chain with lower carbon products and services will enhance your reputation. Increasing number of consumers are making choices based on a company's environmental credentials.

* Government Regulation

There's likely to be more initiatives introduced like Carbon Reduction Commitment, Climate Change Levy, & Emission Trading Scheme, as well as tighter building regulations.

* Environmental Benefits

Climate change is commonly accepted to be the greatest threat to our environment. It will result in us all experiencing more extreme weather – with wetter winters and drier summers. This has been caused by the levels of greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide (CO2), which have been released into our atmosphere.  Even one small office can emit three to five tonnes of carbon dioxide a year.

TOP TIPS

For a quick start – here are some top tips on energy saving.

SWITCH OFF EQUIPMENT

Leaving a single computer and monitor switched ‘on’ for 24 hours-a-day will cost over Rs.100 a year. Switching it off and using ‘stand-by’ features when you are not using it could reduce this by 30% a year.  Doing this may also prolong the lifespan of the equipment.

GOOD MAINTENANCE

Equipment which is poorly maintained will not operate efficiently and will need more energy.

SPEAK TO YOUR COLLEAGUES

Make sure everyone knows that saving energy will help the company.  Ask your colleagues for their ideas on how you could all save energy.

GREEN LIVING TIPS

Commercial:

Assemble a team, develop an energy profile, and execute the program. Effective energy management begins by assembling a team that includes the building owner, facility manager, an energy solutions provider, and representatives from other key departments. Appoint a team leader to own the project and track its progress. Develop a facility wide energy profile that includes supply-side intelligence. Focus on how energy used in the building is generated, transmitted, and delivered and how this impacts your utility bills.

Define the program's objectives. The energy team's first step should be to define the project's scope and objectives. It is critical to align energy targets with the company's overall performance and business goals. Keep actions focused on results to ensure continued commitment. Evaluate how the program will achieve desired outcomes, such as decreased operating costs, higher operations performance, tax benefits, and environmental certification.

Document the facility's energy profile. The energy profile, including energy costs and consumption data, gives the team baseline information from which to set objectives. These quantifiable objectives are a means to measure the energy management program's progress.

Evaluate energy use patterns. Evaluate when, where, and how all the facility systems and equipment use energy. Involve various departments to determine the facility's energy consuming equipment and activities.

Pay less for your energy. The price of energy depends on how much and when the facility uses its power. The charges will be larger if the facility uses a lot of power over a short period of time, and smaller if the customer uses power at a more constant rate. The good news is you can reduce costs by controlling energy usage during peak periods. There are many innovative possibilities for reducing peak period energy loads. Such as an ice storage solution in which a chiller operates in chiller mode during the day and in ice-making mode at night. This provides cooling to the building the next day during peak hours. Such a solution improves the reliability of the power grid by shifting peak cooling loads to off-peak hours.

Consider alternative ways to generate energy. There are many options from wind farms to geothermal technologies to generate energy. Self-generated energy helps facilities control power costs, improve reliability, and achieve environmental goals. An energy solutions expert should be consulted to build energy system and optimize purchasing tactics.

Use a more efficient HVAC system. Heating and cooling are large contributors to total energy usage. Therefore, heating and cooling systems are obvious targets for efficiency improvements. "Always use highly efficient HVAC systems".

Stay committed. Whatever strategies you implement, the most important thing is that your energy management team remains informed and highly committed to taking the facility to the next level.

Residential:

Heat and cool your house only when needed by using a programmable thermostat.

Use only energy efficient washing machine & dish washer. Run them only when you have a full load Running a partially full washing machine & dish washer uses the same amount of energy, so make sure the machine is at full capacity every time you use it.

Take short showers instead of baths. Large amounts of energy are required to heat water. Showering requires less hot water and can decrease household energy costs. Use solar water heaters.

Use energy-efficient lighting throughout your home. Light-emitting diodes (LED) lights are often 10 times more efficient than compact fluorescents. Use solar powered lamps/lights wherever possible.

Upgrade your current air conditioning system to an Energy Star rated air conditioning unit.

a) Install energy saving solar control films, Sun Screens, Window blinds on exterior glasses, to reduce the amount of the heat transferred through your windows by up to 75% and will not affect visibility.
b) Install exterior cladding- Hunter Douglas make Facades & Claddings with mechanical fixing methods and with proper breathing gaps to reduce the heat absorption through exterior walls

Choose green cleaning supplies. Each time you use a standard cleaning solution, harmful chemicals are released into the environment. Use non-toxic organic dish soap, detergent, and cleaners to protect yourself and the environment.

Purchase organically grown food. Eating organic food is healthier for you. Organic farms do not use harmful pesticides that pollute the environment.

Bring your own bag to the grocery store. We use billions of plastic bags each year. These bags are used for only a couple minutes and then thrown away. Plastic bags never biodegrade, so remember to bring your own bag for your next grocery store visit.
